Ha! Linguistic Precedent for Calling Otters Water Doggos!

Via Wildlife Trusts Wales, which writes:

An otter? Not in Welsh. 👀

We call it dyfrgi (pronounced roughly duhv-r-gee) - which literally means “water dog.” 🐕💧

And it makes a lot of sense! Otters are perfectly at home in the water, with webbed feet, powerful tails and streamlined bodies that make them brilliant swimmers.

First we had heulgi - the “sun dog” – and now we have the “water dog”. Apparently Welsh wildlife has a lot of dogs. 😂

Turns out heulgwn are basking sharks, which are honestly kind of terrifying, not to mention MUCH less adorable than otters - point to dyfrgwn!
