Dobhar-chú? How Bout I Chew This Seaweed?
Via Kildare Wildlife Rescue, which writes:
Have you heard the tales of the Irish cryptid Dobhar-chú?
Dobhar-chú is a described as a massive otter like beast that grows over 2 metres in length that lives in loughs or around the coasts and has an eerie whistle like call that can be heard echoing across the water. Reports of the "Water Hound" have been documented as recently as 2003!
While we have never come across the King Otter in care, we currently are caring for SEVEN otters!
Irish otters can be found in waterways across Ireland and are even found along the coast, which is why this cub (26-112) is playing with seaweed. To keep their time in rehabilitation interesting, we offer the otters natural enrichment items like seaweed and shells in their pools to prevent boredom.
The Irish for Otter is Madra Uisce which means water dog, and though they are much smaller than the fabled Dobhar-chú they do vocalise with whistles!
If you would like to support the otter cubs we currently have in care you can by becoming an Otter Sponsor. For €35 we will send you a digital pack filled with Otter information, bio cards for the otters currently in care, a print and activity pages.
